Pioneer Park Playground and Picnic Area

One of the priority projects of the Mission Hills Town Council (MHTC) in 2008 was the much needed upgrade to the children’s playground at Pioneer Park.  The existing playground was over 14 years old and in need of an upgrade.  In addition, without a separate structure for the younger children the playground created a less than safe play environment for our little ones.  The goal of the 2008 project was to provide an improved play area for our children by installing some of the newest play components available today to challenge and excite our children in new ways.  We also wanted to provide a safer play environment for children of all ages by providing separate play structures for toddlers and older children as well as better surfacing within the play area.

Given the fiscal situation at the city, there was little funding available for this type of project.  As a result, the Mission Hills Town Council decided to proceed with this project as a community-based effort.  The MHTC parks subcommittee created a design that addressed the concerns of many in the community and provided a much improved play area for our children.

The project was divided into 2 phases.  Phase 1, included the play area and the small picnic area to north of the play area.  Phase 1 was completed in July 2008.  Phase 2 will include the larger picnic area and the walkways next to the picnic area. The MHTC parks subcommittee is currently completing the necessary drawings for phase 2 and is targeted to be completed by July 2011.   Since 2008, the community has generously donated over $130,000 for the two phases with a substantial support from County Supervisor Ron Roberts. A boulder with a plaque adjacent to the playground provides the list of donors who provided a substantial amount of the funding needed to undertake these improvements.
